The United States, Denmark and Greenland have agreed to form a high-level working group to seek areas of compromise over Greenland’s future, despite what Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen described as a “fundamental disagreement” with Washington.
Rasmussen said Denmark and Greenland reject U.S. President Donald Trump’s position that Greenland should become part of the United States, stressing that the island’s security can be ensured within the current framework and that Denmark’s territorial integrity and Greenland’s right to self-determination are non-negotiable. Trump has reiterated that anything short of U.S. control of Greenland is “unacceptable” on national security grounds.
Amid rising tensions, the European Union and NATO allies have stepped up political and military support for Greenland. Germany, Sweden and Norway have announced deployments and reconnaissance missions, while Denmark confirmed it is increasing its military presence in and around the Arctic territory.
