The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the first two human cases of H5 bird flu in California, both involving individuals exposed to infected dairy cows. These cases are separate instances of animal-to-human transmission, and the CDC emphasized that the risk to the public remains low. H5N1 bird flu was detected in U.S. cows for the first time this year, though it has been affecting wild birds and poultry since 2022. In 2024, 16 human cases of H5 have been reported in the U.S., primarily involving exposure to infected dairy cows or poultry.
