A new COVID-19 variant, LB.1, is contributing to a recent increase in infections in the United States, according to the CDC. Test positivity has risen to 6.6% from 5.4% in the previous week. LB.1 is now the third most prevalent variant, making up 17.5% of cases, behind KP.3 (33.1%) and KP.2 (20.8%). All three variants are descendants of the JN.1 strain, which caused a surge last winter. The CDC is closely monitoring LB.1 and KP.3 as they spread across the country.
