U.S. bars Palestinian President Abbas and 80 other officials from UN General Assembly in New York

The U.S. has barred Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas from traveling to New York for next month’s UN General Assembly, also denying visas to about 80 Palestinian officials. Washington cited extremism concerns and opposition to “unilateral recognition” of Palestine, though Abbas was set to attend a summit where U.S. allies planned to recognize Palestinian statehood. Palestinian leaders called the move a violation of the UN headquarters agreement, while the UN said it will raise the issue with the U.S. State Department.
