Typhoon Tapah, the 16th typhoon of the year, made landfall in Taishan, Guangdong Province, on Monday morning with maximum wind speeds of 30 meters per second, equivalent to a severe tropical storm. The system is moving northwest at around 20 kilometers per hour and is expected to weaken and leave Guangdong by late afternoon.
The typhoon has brought heavy to extreme rainfall and strong winds across the Pearl River Delta, western Guangdong, and eastern parts of the province. Authorities have warned of possible secondary disasters and urged precautions for coastal activities.
Transport and public services were heavily disrupted. Train services on the Shenzhen-Zhanjiang and Guangzhou-Maoming lines were suspended, with operations expected to resume Tuesday. Navigation on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge was restricted, and Macao suspended all classes and public transport, with more than 50 flights affected.
Schools were closed in Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and several other cities, while outdoor activities, scenic areas, and beaches were shut down to ensure safety.
