Twelve U.S. states have sued former President Donald Trump’s administration over what they call “illegal tariffs.” The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York by attorneys general from states like New York, Illinois, and Oregon. They want the court to block the tariffs, which they say were put in place without proper legal authority.
The states argue that Trump used emergency powers unfairly, creating chaos in the economy by setting tariffs based on his own decisions rather than following the law. They say Congress never gave him the power to do this, and the tariffs are hurting American consumers and businesses.
New York officials said the tariffs could cause more inflation and job losses. Trump had used an emergency law on April 2 to place tariffs on goods from all U.S. trading partners, which caused strong backlash and market instability.
The White House responded by saying the tariffs are meant to protect American industries and workers.
