Trump’s tariffs draw fire at home and abroad amid economic fears, polls show

U.S. President Donald Trump’s new tariffs on imports have sparked widespread backlash both domestically and internationally. In the U.S., public opinion is turning against the tariffs, with 54% opposing them and many expressing concern over rising inflation and worsening economic conditions, according to recent polls. A Reuters/Ipsos survey showed that most Americans expect price hikes on daily goods, electronics, and home repairs.

The tariffs—ranging from a 10% baseline to as high as 49% on countries like China and Vietnam—took effect Wednesday and have rattled global markets. The move has also prompted retaliatory actions from the EU, Canada, and others, with strong European public support for such countermeasures, despite fears of economic fallout. A YouGov survey across seven European countries found majorities in favor of retaliating, even though many expect significant negative impacts on their national economies.

The backlash extends beyond the West. In Brazil, public opinion of Trump and the U.S. has sharply declined since the tariffs were announced, with unfavorable views nearly doubling. Overall, the new tariff policy is deepening economic and political rifts both at home and abroad.
