Trump threatens to take $3 billion grants from Harvard amid escalating clash

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to reallocate $3 billion in federal grants from Harvard University to trade schools, accusing Harvard of antisemitism. This marks an escalation in his administration’s broader campaign against elite universities, which he claims promote liberal ideologies and suppress conservative voices.

The Trump administration has already frozen over $2.6 billion in research funding for Harvard and barred the school from enrolling new international students. Trump is also demanding a list of Harvard’s foreign students, suggesting that some may pose national security risks—a claim unsupported by facts, as foreign student visas are already regulated by the government.

Harvard has pushed back, filing a lawsuit and securing a temporary restraining order against the administration’s attempt to strip its ability to enroll international students. Experts warn that these actions politicize education, damage U.S. higher education’s global reputation, and risk driving international students away—undermining America’s long-term competitiveness.

Critics say Trump’s motivations are rooted in his belief that elite universities are hostile to conservative values and serve as centers of liberal indoctrination.
