Trump threatens Hamas amid push towards next steps of Gaza truce

The U.S. is urging Hamas to disarm as part of the next stage of the Gaza ceasefire, with Vice President JD Vance warning of severe consequences if it refuses. The ceasefire, in place for 11 days, remains unstable as Israel and Hamas accuse each other of violations. At least 87 Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers have died since it began. Hamas says it is still committed to the truce.

Diplomatic talks involving the U.S., Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye aim to move toward a long-term agreement. Trump’s peace plan calls for Hamas to disarm, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and steps toward a Palestinian state, but Hamas rejects disarmament. Discussions in Egypt include forming a technocratic government for Gaza and possibly bringing in an international force, though Israel opposes Hamas involvement in any future governance.

Humanitarian efforts continue as hostage bodies are exchanged and aid flows slowly into Gaza. The World Food Program has delivered food for about 500,000 people, but daily aid is far below what is needed. Only two southern crossings are open, and northern Gaza remains inaccessible, worsening famine conditions.
