U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 30% tariffs on imports from Mexico and the European Union starting August 1, after trade negotiations failed. In letters posted on Truth Social, Trump accused Mexico of not stopping drug cartels and illegal immigration, and criticized the EU for unfair trade practices leading to persistent U.S. trade deficits. He warned both not to retaliate and encouraged them to relocate businesses to the U.S.
The EU responded by expressing willingness to negotiate but warned it would take countermeasures if needed. EU President Ursula von der Leyen said the tariffs would harm transatlantic supply chains. Mexico’s government also objected, calling the move unfair, and confirmed it is in talks with the U.S. to prevent the tariffs from taking effect. Trump has issued similar tariff threats to over 20 other countries recently.
