U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order ending most sanctions on Syria, according to the White House. The order lifts restrictions to support Syria’s path to stability and peace, while maintaining sanctions on President Bashar al-Assad. It also eases export controls and allows certain foreign aid. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is tasked with exploring further sanctions relief through the UN. Syria has been under U.S. sanctions since 1979, with increased measures added in 2004 and 2011. Trump previously announced this move at a forum in Riyadh on May 13.
