President Donald Trump warned that the United States might have to “unwind” trade deals with the European Union, Japan, South Korea, and other partners if the Supreme Court rules against his administration in a case challenging the legality of certain tariffs. Speaking at the White House, Trump said a loss would cause significant harm to the U.S., though he expressed confidence that his administration would prevail.
The case follows an appeals court ruling that found many of Trump’s tariffs, including “reciprocal” tariffs from April and February measures against China, Canada, and Mexico, were illegal. The decision does not affect tariffs imposed under other legal authority, such as those on steel and aluminum imports.
Trade experts note that U.S. importers, rather than foreign companies, bear the cost of tariffs, but economists warn that such duties can contribute to domestic inflation. Lawmakers and trade analysts said Trump’s comments have added uncertainty about U.S. trade policy.
