Former President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the U.S. and Japan have reached a new trade deal, which includes a 15% tariff on U.S. imports from Japan and $550 billion in Japanese investments in the U.S. The agreement also reportedly expands market access for American exports such as cars, trucks, rice, and certain agricultural products.
Trump did not mention any reduction of the current 25% tariff on Japanese automobiles, a major export sector for Japan. Neither the White House nor Japan’s Foreign Ministry has commented on the deal so far.
Trump also revealed plans for a U.S.-Japan joint LNG (liquefied natural gas) venture in Alaska, though no details were provided. The announcement followed a meeting with Japan’s top tariff negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, at the White House.
