US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the US is in talks with a “more reasonable regime” to end the war in Iran, but warned Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face US attacks on its oil wells, power plants, and Kharg Island. He also threatened Iran’s desalination plants.
Trump had paused attacks on Iran’s energy facilities until April 6. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said no enemy vessels would be allowed normal passage through its waters and noted some ships had coordinated transit with Iranian authorities.
While Trump claims progress in talks, he has sent more US troops to the region. Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused Washington of signaling negotiations while preparing a ground invasion, prompting further defiance from Tehran.
Iran denies direct talks with the US, saying messages are transmitted through a third party. Pakistan, acting as intermediary, is preparing to host “meaningful talks” in the coming days to try to end the conflict.
