US President Donald Trump said Friday his administration will hand control of the Kennedy Center to Congress after a federal court blocked his plan to rename and restructure the institution.
A judge ruled that the Kennedy Center must retain its original name honoring President John F. Kennedy and said only Congress has the authority to change it. The court also temporarily blocked efforts to shut the center for renovations.
Trump criticized the ruling, calling it politically motivated, and said he no longer wants to continue managing the performing arts center unless he can fully restore it.
The Kennedy Center, a major US cultural institution, has faced controversy since Trump took a more direct role in its leadership and attempted major changes to its operations and branding.
