US President Donald Trump said he is creating an “AI Force” and plans to appoint an “AI Czar” to oversee artificial intelligence policy. He said the US should support the growth of the AI industry rather than restrict it, while also using existing criminal and civil laws to deal with harmful uses of the technology.
Trump compared AI to major technological changes such as the Industrial Revolution and the internet, saying it could eventually contribute as much as 25% of US GDP. However, he did not give details about how the new AI Force would be organized or what responsibilities the AI Czar would have.
The announcement comes as the US continues to debate how to balance rapid AI development with concerns about safety, misuse and other potential risks.
