In an interview with Politico, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized European leaders as “weak” and said Europe is becoming a “decaying” group of nations. He claimed European governments are overly focused on political correctness and unable to manage issues such as migration, which he said threatens the viability of some countries.
Trump also said Europe cannot effectively influence the Ukraine conflict and argued that Russia currently holds the advantage. He repeated his call for Ukraine to hold new elections.
His comments came after the release of the U.S. National Security Strategy, which promotes challenging Europe’s current approach to immigration. European leaders pushed back strongly. European Council President Antonio Costa rejected U.S. interference in European politics, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called parts of the strategy “unacceptable,” stressing that Europe can manage its own democracy and should not rely too heavily on the U.S.
Several media outlets noted that the new U.S. strategy gives very limited attention to Europe, highlighting a growing divide between Washington and its traditional allies.
