Trump-Putin summit nears, U.S., Europe and Ukraine coordinate stance on Russia

U.S. President Donald Trump will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, after holding a video call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European leaders, the EU, and NATO to coordinate positions on the summit and a possible Russia-Ukraine ceasefire. Trump warned Putin of “very serious consequences” if he rejects the proposal and signaled readiness for a follow-up meeting involving Zelenskyy if talks go well.

Zelenskyy, joined by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, outlined five principles agreed with Western partners: Ukraine’s direct role in all negotiations, an immediate ceasefire, reliable security guarantees with U.S. involvement, no Russian veto over Ukraine’s EU or NATO membership, and stronger sanctions if Moscow refuses peace. European leaders backed Ukraine’s security and stressed unity in approach, while NATO’s chief said the next move is up to Putin.

Both Kyiv and Moscow reaffirmed their territorial claims, with Russia citing constitutional protections. The White House said Zelenskyy was not invited to Alaska because the meeting was proposed by Putin as a bilateral step to assess ways to end the war.
