U.S. President Donald Trump has fired Erika McEntarfer, head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), after a weak July jobs report showed only 73,000 jobs added—well below the expected 104,000—and downward revisions for May and June totaling 258,000 jobs. Trump accused McEntarfer, a Biden appointee, of manipulating job data to hurt Republicans, though he offered no evidence.
Democrats and economists condemned the firing as politically motivated, warning it undermines trust in independent data agencies. Former BLS officials stressed there was no sign of data tampering and called the action damaging to the credibility of U.S. economic reporting.
The job report and Trump’s controversial move triggered a market selloff. The Dow fell over 540 points, with major indexes and tech stocks tumbling. Markets were further shaken by a new Trump executive order imposing steep tariffs on Canadian goods and many other imports.
