Former U.S. President Donald Trump has been ordered by a Manhattan federal jury to pay $83.3 million to writer E. Jean Carroll for defamatory statements he made against her in 2019. The jury, consisting of nine New Yorkers, awarded Carroll $11 million for a reputational repair program, $7.3 million in other compensatory damages, and $65 million in punitive damages. This amount is more than eight times what Carroll initially sought in her lawsuit. Trump, who left the courthouse before the verdict, criticized it as “absolutely ridiculous” in a post on his Truth Social platform and announced his intention to appeal.
