On Thursday, the Trump administration revoked Harvard University’s certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, preventing the school from enrolling new international students. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated the action was taken due to Harvard’s “repeated failure to comply with federal law” and warned other universities that enrolling international students is a privilege, not a right.
In addition to halting future enrollment, current international students at Harvard must transfer to another institution or risk losing their legal status in the U.S.
Harvard condemned the decision, calling it unlawful and retaliatory. The university emphasized its commitment to supporting its international community, which represents over 140 countries and accounts for more than 27% of the student body as of fall 2023.
This move follows an earlier decision in April when the administration froze $2.2 billion in federal grants to Harvard after the university refused to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion programs or screen foreign students for ideological reasons.
