US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday via Truth Social that he has instructed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to substantially reduce joint military exercises with South Korea, criticizing the drills as excessively costly to the United States and sending an “inappropriate and hostile” signal. Trump also cited South Korea’s refusal to join U.S. actions regarding Iran’s denuclearization as a factor in his decision. In response, South Korea’s Defense Ministry stated that the ongoing Ulchi Freedom Shield joint exercises are proceeding as planned while they monitor for any further developments.
