Trump inks major defense deal with Saudi Arabia, announces plan to lift sanctions on

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a $600 billion investment deal with Saudi Arabia during his visit to Riyadh on Tuesday. The agreements cover energy, defense, technology, infrastructure, and critical minerals, according to the White House.

One of the key parts of the deal is a nearly $142 billion defense agreement, which the White House called the largest in history. It includes advanced military equipment and training from over a dozen U.S. defense companies.

“This is a major step in strengthening Saudi Arabia’s defense and regional security with American support,” the White House said.

Later, at an investment forum, Trump said the U.S. would lift sanctions on Syria to give the country “a chance,” and announced early steps toward normalizing relations with Damascus.

Trump praised U.S.-Saudi ties and expressed hope that Saudi Arabia would join the Abraham Accords, a U.S.-led initiative to normalize relations between Israel and Arab nations. However, progress on these agreements has slowed due to the ongoing war in Gaza, where over 52,900 Palestinians have died since October 2023.

Trump also shared plans for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, stating that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Türkiye this week to take part in negotiations.

Trump’s Middle East trip runs from Tuesday to Friday, with visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. This is his first major foreign trip since taking office in January.
