U.S. President Donald Trump has granted a 75-day extension to Chinese tech company ByteDance to resolve operational issues related to TikTok, delaying the “sell-or-ban” deadline to June 19, 2025. This is the second extension since the law requiring TikTok’s divestment passed in early 2024, citing national security concerns.
Trump announced the extension via social media, stating progress had been made on a deal to keep TikTok operating in the U.S. The proposed agreement would see TikTok spun off into a U.S.-based company with majority American ownership, while ByteDance retains a minority stake.
ByteDance confirmed negotiations are ongoing and stressed any deal must comply with Chinese regulations. The Chinese government criticized the forced divestment as contrary to market principles.
TikTok, used by 170 million Americans, has taken steps to address U.S. concerns, including setting up data security protocols, partnering with Oracle, and launching legal challenges. Despite these efforts, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the divest-or-ban mandate in early 2025.
Public support for a ban has declined significantly, with only 34% of U.S. adults now in favor, down from 50% in 2023. Creators and small businesses reliant on TikTok express growing frustration over the continued uncertainty and fear disruptions to their livelihoods.
