Guarding the future: How China is strengthening maternal and child health protections

China has made significant strides in improving maternal and child health through infrastructure upgrades, policy innovations, and technological advancements. The country has modernized its healthcare system by introducing “maternal-friendly hospitals” and “one-stop” clinics, making it easier for expectant mothers to access comprehensive care. This has contributed to a notable reduction in maternal mortality, with Beijing’s rate reaching 0.69 per 100,000 live births in 2024.

Neonatal care has also progressed, with provinces like Hainan and Guizhou implementing early autism screening programs and offering specialized rehabilitation services for children. Financial support, such as subsidies for autism rehabilitation, further helps families access necessary services. Flexible work models and policies like “mommy posts” are also aiding parents, especially mothers, in balancing work and childcare responsibilities.

Technology plays a key role in improving prenatal screenings and mental health care, including perinatal depression screenings. On the global stage, China is sharing its expertise through international collaborations, particularly through South-South cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative, helping other countries enhance their maternal and child health systems.
