US President Donald Trump said Vice President JD Vance’s recent contact with Iran was focused on helping the country obtain medical supplies, following reports that Vance had sent a letter to Tehran seeking to restart peace negotiations. Iran confirmed receiving the letter but said it had not yet responded, adding that any progress would depend on Washington meeting its conditions. Trump denied directly ordering Vance to reopen peace talks, saying the discussion was mainly about providing medical assistance. Meanwhile, the US military is continuing to consider possible military options against Iran, with senior military officials reportedly briefing Trump at the White House.
Iranian officials have also maintained their demands for ending the confrontation, including lifting the US blockade on Iranian ports, removing sanctions on Iranian oil exports and ending hostilities across the region. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran’s seven conditions must be met before progress can be made, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, a vessel caught fire while travelling through the strait near Oman on Thursday, although the cause and extent of the damage remain unknown. The ongoing tensions have also contributed to rising global energy costs and political pressure on the Trump administration ahead of the US midterm elections.
