U.S. President Donald Trump set a new deadline of 10 to 12 days for Russia to make progress toward ending the Ukraine crisis, warning of sanctions on Russia and its export buyers if no advances occur. Speaking from his golf course in Scotland, Trump expressed disappointment in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ongoing attacks on Ukraine despite previous efforts to settle the conflict. Trump emphasized he is no longer interested in further talks and intends to use sanctions and tariffs as penalties.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev criticized Trump’s ultimatum approach, warning it could lead to war involving the U.S. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Trump’s statement, calling it timely and supporting tougher sanctions as crucial to ending the war.
Recently, Russian and Ukrainian diplomats met in Istanbul, with Ukraine proposing a summit between Zelenskyy and Putin by the end of August. However, the Kremlin considers such a meeting unlikely soon and insists it would only happen as a final step toward peace. Russia’s Foreign Ministry stated that real peace requires the West to stop supplying weapons to Ukraine.
