Trump confronts South African president with conspiracy claims

During a tense Oval Office meeting, former U.S. President Donald Trump confronted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa with debunked conspiracy theories about “white genocide” and land seizures in South Africa. Ramaphosa firmly denied the allegations, stressing that crime affects all South Africans, mostly Black citizens.

Trump cited disproven sources, including videos and articles, which media outlets and critics labeled as white nationalist propaganda, possibly linked to the group AfriForum. The meeting further strained already tense U.S.–South Africa relations, worsened by Trump’s earlier cancellation of AIDS relief funding and the expulsion of South Africa’s ambassador.

Trump’s administration criticized South Africa’s land reform law, while South Africa accused the U.S. of spreading misinformation and ignoring the country’s colonial and apartheid history. As tensions grew, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the U.S. would skip the upcoming G20 meeting hosted by South Africa.
