U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged what he called “Iranian patriots” to continue protesting and said he had canceled all meetings with Iranian officials, while warning that further military action against Iran remained an option. He also reiterated that countries doing business with Iran would face a 25 percent tariff on trade with the United States.
Iranian authorities said security forces have detained 297 people accused of involvement in recent unrest, which officials described as riots linked to foreign-backed groups. Protests erupted nationwide on December 28, 2025, following a sharp depreciation of the rial and soaring inflation.
The United Nations voiced concern over rising military rhetoric and called for diplomacy. Iran urged the UN to condemn the United States for inciting violence, while Russia warned against external interference. Diplomatic contacts involving Iran, Qatar, and U.S. representatives have continued, according to media reports.
