Former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for saying that Ukraine will not accept Russia’s takeover of Crimea. Trump said this kind of talk makes it harder to reach peace with Russia. He questioned why Ukraine didn’t fight for Crimea back in 2014 when Russia took it.
Zelenskyy recently said Ukraine is open to peace talks after a possible ceasefire but won’t legally accept that Crimea belongs to Russia.
Trump said Zelenskyy is making things worse and warned that Ukraine could lose more if the war continues. He believes peace is possible soon and wants Zelenskyy to agree to a deal.
A White House spokesperson said Trump is getting impatient. Meanwhile, talks in London between U.S., Ukrainian, and European officials were emotional, but Zelenskyy hopes future work will lead to peace.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio canceled his trip to the London talks, showing there are disagreements between the U.S., Ukraine, and Europe about how to end the war.
Trump’s team is still working on peace efforts. His envoy, Steve Witkoff, is meeting with Russian President Putin again soon to keep peace talks going.
