Truce agreement between Thailand and Cambodia comes into effect

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a truce that took effect at midnight on Monday, ending their deadliest conflict in over a decade after five days of intense fighting that displaced more than 300,000 people. The ceasefire was brokered through efforts by Malaysia (ASEAN chair), China, and the United States, with leaders from both countries meeting in Putrajaya, Malaysia, to agree on halting hostilities, resuming direct communication, and establishing a mechanism to enforce the ceasefire.

Since the clashes began on July 24, at least 38 people, mostly civilians, have died along the 800-kilometer border. No violence was reported in the hours before the ceasefire took effect. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called the agreement a crucial first step toward restoring peace and security.
