Top White House officials issue dire economic warnings if shutdown drags on

Top White House economic officials warned that the ongoing U.S. government shutdown could severely hurt the economy, possibly causing growth to drop by half or even turn negative in the fourth quarter.

White House adviser Kevin Hassett said the shutdown’s impact, especially on air travel due to a shortage of air traffic controllers, could harm economic activity during the busy Thanksgiving period. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also said the situation is worsening each day the shutdown continues.

Sunday marked the 40th day of the shutdown, which has left federal workers unpaid and disrupted food aid, parks, and travel. More than 2,000 flights were canceled and over 8,000 delayed, with authorities cutting flight capacity by 10 percent at 40 major airports to manage staffing shortages.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that air travel could “slow to a trickle” before Thanksgiving. Airlines for America reported that over 4 million passengers have been affected since the shutdown began on October 1, estimating a daily economic loss of up to $580 million.
