TikTok, the social media platform owned by ByteDance, has announced plans to intensify its efforts against fake news and covert influence operations ahead of the European Parliament elections in June. The company will launch local language “election centers” in-app for all 27 European Union member states to provide users with trustworthy and authoritative information about the electoral process. TikTok, which already collaborates with nine fact-checking organizations in Europe, intends to expand its fact-checking network, launch additional media literacy campaigns, and introduce covert influence operations reports to enhance transparency and accountability. The move aims to address concerns about misinformation, deepfakes, and the influence of social media platforms in elections.
