A regional express train derailed on Sunday evening in the southern German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, resulting in three fatalities and several serious injuries, according to local police.
The accident occurred near the town of Riedlingen when two carriages left the tracks. A large number of rescue personnel were immediately deployed to the scene, and the affected railway line and a nearby road have been closed.
The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation. Reports from the German Press Agency indicate that the area had experienced a storm earlier, and authorities are investigating if heavy rain or a landslide was a factor.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz extended his condolences following the incident, stating on social media, “We mourn the victims. I express my sympathy to their families.”
