Thousands of people gathered outside Portugal’s parliament in Lisbon on Tuesday to protest a police operation that cleared housing-rights encampments in Lisbon and Porto over the weekend. The operation resulted in dozens of reported injuries and arrests. Hospitals in Lisbon treated 27 people, compared with five injuries initially reported by police.
Portuguese President António José Seguro condemned the clashes and urged political leaders to work together to address the country’s housing crisis. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro defended the police response, saying officers had acted proportionately to restore public order. The protests took place as parliament debated the 2027 state budget, with discussions scheduled to continue through Wednesday.
