Thousands of fish have perished in Bustillos Lagoon, northern Mexico, as the lagoon partly dried up due to a severe drought affecting the country. The water level in the lagoon dropped below 50 percent of its normal capacity, leading to higher concentrations of pollutants that became hazardous to the aquatic life. The dead fish started appearing a week ago, and by Wednesday, the area was filled with a foul odor as workers removed the decaying fish to prevent the spread of disease. This incident is part of a broader issue of extreme heat in Mexico, where record temperatures have been recorded in several cities, and 125 people have died since the hot season began in mid-March.
