Thailand has downgraded diplomatic ties with Cambodia after several Thai soldiers were injured by landmines near the disputed border. Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai recalled the Thai ambassador, ordered the Cambodian ambassador to be expelled, and filed a formal protest, accusing Cambodia of planting new landmines and violating the international mine ban treaty.
Cambodia strongly denied the allegations, saying the Thai troops had strayed from agreed patrol routes into uncleared minefields. Cambodian officials emphasized the need for peaceful resolution based on international law and called Thailand’s accusations baseless. Tensions have been rising since a deadly border clash in May.
