Thailand confirmed a case of the mpox clade 1b variant on August 22, the second known case of this strain outside Africa. The virus was found in a 66-year-old European man who had arrived from an unspecified African country. This is the first detection of the clade 1b strain in Thailand, though no local infections were found through contact tracing. Clade 1b is causing concern globally due to its ability to spread through close contact. The WHO declared the outbreak a public health emergency, with over 200 cases detected across five African countries.
