Thailand-Cambodia conflict intensifies, spreads along disputed border

Renewed fighting erupted along the Thailand–Cambodia border on Tuesday, with Thailand saying it launched operations to expel Cambodian troops it claimed had crossed into Thai territory. The clashes, the most intense since July, have shattered a fragile U.S.-brokered ceasefire that previously halted five days of heavy fighting.

Cambodia accused Thai forces of firing through the night in a contested border area, reporting two more civilian deaths and raising its toll to six. Thailand confirmed one soldier killed and accused Cambodia of increasing its military presence, deploying snipers, heavy weapons, and fortifying positions near the frontier.

Both governments traded accusations, with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet warning Thailand not to attack civilian areas, while Thai officials insisted they were responding to Cambodian incursions. The violence follows months of rising tension, including the killing of a Cambodian soldier in May, a large troop buildup, and diplomatic breakdowns.

The border, disputed for more than a century, has seen repeated flare-ups, including deadly clashes in 2011 and mass evacuations earlier this year. The latest fighting has raised regional concern, with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urging an immediate halt to hostilities and a return to diplomacy. Analysts said sustainable peace would require trusted mediators and a deeper resolution of historical grievances rather than reliance on external pressure.
