The United States has increased its military presence around Iran ahead of nuclear talks in Geneva, raising concerns about a possible strike. The USS Gerald R. Ford has arrived in the region and is set to join the USS Abraham Lincoln, marking the second time Washington has deployed two aircraft carriers there since last year’s bombardment of Iranian nuclear sites. U.S. refueling and transport aircraft have also landed in Israel, and non-essential embassy staff are being evacuated from Beirut.
Reports said Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine warned U.S. President Donald Trump that a strike on Iran could risk a prolonged conflict and endanger U.S. troops, though Trump denied claims that Caine opposed military action. Trump said he preferred a deal but warned that failure in talks would have serious consequences for Iran.
Meanwhile, Iran has vowed “ferocious” retaliation against any attack. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi called the Geneva talks a new opportunity but cautioned that aggression could spark a wider regional conflict. Analysts say uncertainty remains over whether negotiations will succeed, with Israel’s stance and U.S. domestic political considerations also influencing the situation.
