Typhoon Maysak, the 10th typhoon of 2026 and the first to make landfall in China this year, struck Hainan before bringing record-breaking rainfall and severe flooding to Guangxi. More than 375,000 people have been affected, with around 130,000 evacuated from flooded areas.
Technology has played a key role in rescue efforts. Heavy-lift drones helped rescue stranded residents in Yunbiao Town, where flooding left more than 15,000 people trapped, while Wing Loong unmanned aerial vehicles restored mobile communications in disaster-hit areas.
Authorities have also used AI-powered weather monitoring, satellites and digital flood models to track rainfall, protect power infrastructure and improve early warning systems as heavy rains continue across southern and central China.
