The Tanzania-Zambia “Freedom Railway” (TAZARA) is undergoing a major modernization launched by China, Zambia, and Tanzania. The upgrade aims to repair aging infrastructure, boost freight capacity, and significantly shorten transit times. It will also support a broader “prosperity belt” with logistics hubs, industrial parks, and a training center.
TAZARA remains crucial for local travel, regional trade, and community livelihoods. The revitalized line is expected to strengthen Zambia’s mineral exports, improve access to the Indian Ocean for several landlocked countries, and fund small community projects like clinic upgrades and solar mini-grids.
Experts say the project sets a new model for China-Africa cooperation by linking infrastructure with industrial development, community benefits, and skills training.
