Switzerland tops Group B with win over Canada to set up knockout clash

Switzerland finished top of Group B at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating co-host Canada 2-1 in Vancouver.

Goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi gave Switzerland a comfortable lead before substitute Promise David scored late for Canada. The win sends Switzerland back to Vancouver for its Round of 32 match, while Canada, despite the defeat, advances to the knockout stage for the first time in its World Cup history and will travel to California for its next game.

In the group’s other match, Bosnia and Herzegovina boosted its chances of reaching the knockout stage with a 3-1 victory over Qatar.

Eighteen-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic opened the scoring with a long-range strike, becoming one of the youngest goalscorers in World Cup history. An own goal by Qatari defender Sultan Al-Brake doubled Bosnia’s lead before Hassan Al Haydos pulled one back for Qatar. Substitute Ermin Mahmic sealed the win late on.

The result leaves Bosnia and Herzegovina third in Group B and waiting to see if its record is strong enough to qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-place teams.
