Suspected Ebola cases surpass 1,000 in latest outbreak

Africa CDC says the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached 1,077 suspected cases and 246 probable deaths since it was declared on May 15.

Health officials warn that 11 other African countries, including Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan, are at high risk of spread.

The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment. It is spreading in eastern Congo, where conflict and population movement are making control efforts more difficult.

Experts say early detection was delayed because initial tests focused on a different Ebola strain, allowing transmission to continue unnoticed for weeks.
