Sudan reports 2,302 deaths from cholera since July 2024

Sudan is facing a severe cholera outbreak, with the Ministry of Health reporting 91,034 cases and 2,302 deaths across 17 states since July 2024. Between July 12 and 18 alone, 1,307 new cases and 18 deaths were recorded. North Darfur’s Tawila locality saw the highest number of infections, while South Darfur’s Bileil locality had the most deaths during that week.

The United Nations has warned that Sudan’s humanitarian crisis is worsening due to the cholera outbreak, seasonal diseases like malaria and dengue, ongoing floods, and conflict. The civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, ongoing since April 2023, has devastated the country’s healthcare system—shutting down over 250 hospitals and leaving up to 80% of medical facilities in conflict zones non-operational.
