A new study in Molecular Cell found that viruses can control bacteria using small RNA molecules. Researchers discovered that a virus infecting E. coli produces a tiny RNA, called PreS, which alters the bacteria’s genetic messages to boost DNA replication machinery.
The virus then hijacks this machinery to rapidly copy itself. Disabling PreS sharply reduced viral replication, and similar RNAs were found in other viruses, suggesting this stealth strategy is widespread and could inspire new antimicrobial approaches.
