Japan has reported over 1,000 cases of Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS) in 2024, as of June 9, according to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID). This marks a significant increase in the incidence of this severe bacterial infection, surpassing the 941 cases reported for the entire previous year. STSS, caused primarily by “Group A Streptococcus,” presents with initial symptoms like sore throat, fever, and gastrointestinal issues, which can rapidly progress to severe conditions such as multi-organ failure. Tokyo has the highest number of cases, with 150 confirmed, followed by Aichi and Saitama prefectures. The disease is transmitted through droplets and contact with wounds. Due to its rapid progression, healthcare professionals emphasize the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if severe symptoms occur.
