UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is on a three-day visit to China, accompanied by dozens of business executives and two ministers, marking the first visit by a British prime minister to Beijing in eight years. During the trip, Starmer is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang in Beijing before traveling to Shanghai and then briefly to Japan, with trade talks expected to be a central focus as Britain seeks new economic opportunities. China described the visit as an opportunity to open a new chapter in stable and healthy bilateral relations and deepen practical cooperation. Starmer said the trip was an important chance to make tangible progress, while former UK business secretary Vince Cable said engagement with China serves Britain’s economic interests and reflects a broader effort by Western countries to rebalance relationships amid uncertainty in U.S. policy. Cable highlighted the potential for stronger ties in sectors where Britain has competitive strengths, including services, finance, education, creative industries and specialized manufacturing, noting that China remains an important export market for the UK.
