A global research team led by Chinese scientists has detected a recurring cycle in the motion of a supermassive black hole’s jet in the distant galaxy M87, confirming the black hole’s spin. This finding, published in Nature, shows the jet moves up and down in an 11-year cycle, based on data from 2000 to 2022 collected by international radio telescope networks. The M87 black hole, 55 million light-years away and 6.5 billion times the sun’s mass, was famously imaged in 2019.
