Spain reinforces Ceuta border as migrant surge leaves at least 9 dead

Spain deployed military forces to the North African enclave of Ceuta after thousands of migrants crossed into the territory from Morocco, overwhelming local reception centers and security services. Spanish media reported that at least nine migrants died while attempting the journey by sea. Spanish and Moroccan authorities have agreed to strengthen cooperation and speed up the return of migrants who entered illegally, while the European Union has offered additional support. The surge in arrivals follows a Spanish Supreme Court ruling that ended the practice of immediately returning migrants intercepted at sea without individual legal proceedings.
